Dirt 101

A dynamic course focused on "unit cost of material moved."

Dirt 101 is a four-hour course designed to provide basic earthmoving principles and the ability to use the Caterpillar Performance Handbook. Caterpillar dealers have used the course to train sales and rental professionals and Empire Machinery has found it valuable as a customer seminar.

The course begins with an explanation of the opening sentence in the Performance Handbook:Participants learn that earthmoving is a matter of "moving material from where you don't want it to where you do want it."

"Machine performance must ultimately be measured in unit cost of material moved, a measure that includes both production and costs."

Students then learn how to apply basic earthmoving principles and Performance Handbook charts to perform basic earthmoving estimates both individually and in teams.

Among the topics covered are:

  • Machine selection basics
  • Production factors which impact a job
  • Elements of a cycle
  • Viewing an earthmoving job as a cycle
  • Haul road fundamentals
  • Material terms
  • Determining production off-the-job
  • Determining production on-the-job

This is a dynamic course emphasizing student participation and interspersed with humor and examples of what can go wrong. It provides a focus of information, while respecting the time off the job involved.
